Two: Pearl Jam, side by side with Nirvana, paradoxically brought introverts mainstream. would set sales records - and, spoiler alert, is far superior on its own merits - but Ten had the fresh scent of a new style and the singles to back it up. One: 1991’s Ten was a world-buster of a record. Couple that with the fact that Pearl Jam’s world-busting rise to fame during a crucial tipping point in rock history means they are absolutely to blame for any number of modern-day sins perpetrated on rock music - you can draw the lines directly from Eddie Vedder’s gravelly, ill-enunciated vocals to every anonymous vowel-heavy clenched-jaw rock singer of the late-’90s and early aughts - and evaluating their place in the pantheon is… tricky.Īnd yet, there can be no doubt about several things.

Musically, what once sounded fresh and new sounds old-school and remarkably classicist it calls to mind my default analogy when it comes to questions of influence and popularity in pop music, namely, do we allow an artist’s influence to taint our opinion of them? Or do we give a free pass to the originators, the way we excuse Halloween for inventing the cliches, rather than damning it for boasting them in the first place? Pearl Jam’s level of innovation is a thorny topic to broach in the first place because, well, these guys sounded a lot closer to classic rock than most of the dudes operating in their sphere of influence, a classic five-piece unfurling big arena-rock with a dose of edgy modern-day ennui, uncorking big solos and bigger riffs in the spaces between big vocals and bigger hooks. It’s interesting to see how things have changed since I considered Pearl Jam my favorite band.
